  MY BLOG

   (Dr. Chandra)

The fact that is least realised by the students is that competitive examinations are considerably different from the house examinations of colleges and universities, where they manage to score heavily but fail to do so in the competitives. The primary reason for this happens to be that they continue with the same approach that they have been accustomed to during their academic carrier. The methods of preparation, making of notes, memorising material, writing of answers and handling the diagrams, essentially remains the same which is not adequate. A different approach is therefore needed to do well in these examinations.

Yoga to improve learning

Friday, September 15th, 2006

Yoga is an entirely different concept of improving learning and memory and general upkeep of health and mental alertness. Physical exercises that involve skeletal muscles enhance respiratory rate and blood circulation but cause oxygen debt in the body and increase lactic acid concentration in blood and muscles and hence do not benefit the endocrine glands, smooth muscles and nerves. Yoga is the only method by which you can oxygenate nerves, stimulate parasympathatic system and tone up endocrine glands, thus maintain balanced metabolism. Pranayama is a good technique to combat fatique and gain control over mind and body. Transcendental meditation can rejuvenate brain by removing mental fatigue in ten minutes. Those engaged in strenuous mental work must practice transcendental meditation for ten minutes every four hours to get rid of mental fatigue.

This section deals with the physiological effects of yoga on the body and mind.

 BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE

Ethology is the science of the study of animal behaviour. This is a comparatively new science developed during the last century. It deals with the response of animals to various stimuli and factors operating in the environment.

The following chapters are included in this section:

  • Books on Behaviour
  • Sensory filtering or stimulus filtering
  • Sign stimuli and responsiveness
  • Drive, urge or motivation
  • Types of learning
  • Pheromones in alarm spreading
  • Crypsis and predator-prey interactions
  • Social life of insects
  • Social life of primates
  • Courtship behaviour in Drosophila, fish and birds
  • Orientation, navigation and homing
  • Chronobiology (Biological rhythms and biological clock)
  •  Methods of studying animal behaviour
  •

THE CHORDATES

Chordates are characterised by a rod-like notochord and a hollow nerve cord on the dorsal side of the gut, and pharynx being perforated with gill slits for respiration. Vertebrates have a vertebral column that replaces the notochord, cephalization of the nervous system, a ventral heart, a post-anal tail and division of the coelom into chambers.

Model organisms for research

Sunday, September 10th, 2006

ORGANISMS COMMONLY USED IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

Some organisms by virtue of being easy to handle and breed and to maintain large colonies in the laboratory, have become popular experimental animals. Some of them have been in use for such a long time that information available on their biology, anatomy, physiology, genetics etc. is overwhelming. That makes them suitable organisms for further scientific investigations. Details on some of these animals are given below.
